The inner comapass walk - a reflective method for youth work

Sometimes the most powerful learning happens when we slow down, step outside, and listen inwardly. This is the spirit of the Inner Compass Walk, a method developed during our Colours of Non-Formal Education study visit and now shared with the wider youth work community.

What is the Inner Compass Walk?

The Inner Compass Walk is a guided reflective exercise that invites participants to explore their personal and professional journey while walking in nature or in a calm environment. Through carefully designed prompts and questions, participants connect with their inner compass – their values, motivations, and direction – and link this awareness to their role as youth workers, educators, or community leaders.

How does it work?

  • Participants walk in silence or in pairs, guided by reflective questions.

  • Each stop on the walk focuses on a different theme: past experiences, current challenges, values, and future aspirations.

  • Nature, movement, and reflection combine to create a deep learning atmosphere that goes beyond a traditional workshop setting.

  • A group debrief at the end helps participants articulate and share their insights.

Why use it?

  • It strengthens self-awareness and helps participants recognise their values.

  • It supports clarity in decision-making, both personally and professionally.

  • It fosters connection with others, as participants share their reflections in a safe space.

  • It works especially well in training courses, youth exchanges, or team retreats where participants need time to process experiences and align with their purpose.

Try it out!

The Inner Compass Walk is simple, adaptable, and powerful. All you need is an open space, guiding questions, and time for reflection.
