Cold days in Estonia

Estónsko – krajina krátkych dní, chladného počasia a vynikajúcich palaciniek. No osem dní v Estónsku sme neprišli stráviť pre ani jeden z týchto dôvodov.

Hoci už pred tréningom som si zvykla kresliť a maľovať, grafická facilitácia vyžaduje dve veci, ktoré mi vôbec nešli – jednoduchosť a rýchlosť.

Napríklad vo workshope, kde sme dostali obrázok a mali sme ho rozložiť na jednoduché tvary a potom z tých tvarov zložiť niečo iné som si precvičila rýchle a jednoduché kreslenie a fantáziu.

Danka participated in the project Markers last month in Estonia. Find out, how was this project for her!

Estonia – a country of short days, tasty pancakes and cold weather. But we came to spend 8 days there for none of these things, but to dive into the world of graphic facilitation. As Google says, “graphic facilitation is the use of large scale imagery to lead groups and individuals towards a goal”. Before the training course, I did not have a deep understanding of anything of this, I was just fascinated by the beauty of flipcharts. I was keen to learn how to turn a complex idea into a simple work of art.

The project started on the 7th of January in Estonian picturesque nature. Even though I had been painting and drawing for thirteen years, I used mainly the brush, canvas and acrylic colours and all my works had one issue- it took me a long time to finish them properly. I could have stayed the entire weekend doing a single work to make it perfect and to play with all the details- which may be useful in some occasions but definitely not in graphic facilitation, where the main focus is on simplicity and clarity.

Even though it seemed like a really difficult task, I have to admit that the trainers chose a very effective approach. During the week we were involved in many different activities- for example, we learned that everything is composed of basic shapes and we learned how to deconstruct a picture into these shapes and then construct something different from them. Since for a lot of us it was the first time that we were using markers as a tool of design, we also had a workshop, when we learn how to use them, how to draw emotions, movement, how to shadow or use a nice font. We learned how to create our own visual vocabulary.

Are you asking what a visual vocabulary is? It is the same as a regular vocabulary, the only difference is that in a regular vocabulary the term is followed by a definition while in the visual one the term is followed by a picture representing it, or how to implement the principles of graphic facilitation while creating a poster. Every day we had a team of four people who were responsible for creating a visual summary of the day so we were able to try out the skills we gained. We spent the last two days in Tallinn, where we organized an open event, which was an opportunity for us to transmit the skills we gained to other people. We also explored the medieval old city of Tallinn and the hipster quarter covered in graffiti.

The dinner this day consisted of every kind of pizza – from conservative Margherita to bold pizza with fig jam or peaches. Before the training started I did not know much about graphic facilitation, but in the end, I feel that graphic facilitation is something that I enjoyed and I would like to practice more to gain more skills in it.
